| Meeker County Memorial Hospital (MCMH) Outreach will offer Orthopedic Services Beginning Dec. 20 |

Thomas E. Nelson, M.D. will begin consulting with patients and performing orthopedic surgery at MCMH. Dr. Nelson is an orthopedic physician specialist from the Orthopaedic Consultants, PA group based in Edina. His first day will be Wed., Dec. 20, then on every other Thursday beginning Jan. 4, 2007. “This is the first step in a long range plan to provide orthopedic coverage at MCMH on an ongoing basis,” said Mike Schramm, CEO of MCMH.
Dr. Nelson completed Medical School and his Residency in Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Minnesota. He did his Fellowship at the Mayo Clinic in Orthopaedic Oncology. Specialty and special interests include: general orthopedic surgery, joint replacement revisions, joint reconstruction-lower extremities, orthopedic infection, knee surgery, hip surgery and arthritis. The new Meeker Memorial Clinic is open and brings a “family medicine model” approach to healthcare. Daniel W. Schminke, M.D. will be the full-time primary-care provider in Dassel and will serve the surrounding area. Dr. Schminke’s experience will allow him to offer clinic services to everyone from infants to the elderly to expectant mothers; a place where his patients can care for their families medical needs. Dr. John E. Simon
Psychiatrist Specializing in Geriatric Psychiatry
Dr. John E. Simon recently started practicing in-patient care at MCMH and has a wealth of expertise to offer the geriatric community and the facility. Dr. Simon received his medical training at the University of Nebraska and moved to Minnesota to practice medicine shortly after his graduate studies.
His interest in geriatric care started in 1980 when he began working in nursing homes, treating seniors and helping with illnesses.
“The senior community is underserved right now, and I enjoy the work I do with members of the geriatric community,” says Dr. Simon. “I find the work gratifying, and I can apply my experience and training in Litchfield.”
Dr. Simon treats patients at MCMH three days a week (Monday, Wednesday and Thursday) at the eight-bed Center for Senior Behavioral Health in the hospital. He says he finds the community welcoming and enjoys working here.
One of the biggest challenges Dr. Simon sees for the geriatric community is early diagnosis and treatment of Alzheimer’s disease. With early diagnosis, Dr. Simon says medical treatments can hold off the onset of the debilitating disease for up to two years. He says early diagnosis is key and can easily be accomplished if people are looking for it. He encourages people to contact the Alzheimer’s Association to find more information.
Dr. Simon is married with two adult children and resides in the Twin Cities area.
